Total Return

Definition

Total return includes both capital appreciation (price changes) and income (dividends, interest). It's the most complete measure of investment performance.

Formula

Total Return = (Ending Value - Beginning Value + Income) / Beginning Value × 100

Example

Buy a stock at $100, receive $3 in dividends, sell at $110. Total return = ($110 - $100 + $3) / $100 = 13%. Price return alone would only show 10%.
