Earnings Per Share (EPS)

Definition

EPS is a company's net profit divided by its outstanding shares. It's the foundation for valuation ratios like PE and a key indicator of profitability on a per-share basis.

Formula

EPS = (Net Income - Preferred Dividends) / Weighted Average Shares Outstanding

Example

A company with $500 million net income and 100 million shares has EPS of $5.00. If the stock trades at $100, the PE ratio is 20x.

Traps & Pitfalls

Share buybacks inflate EPS without growing profits. A company can boost EPS 10% by repurchasing 10% of shares — even if net income is flat. Always check if EPS growth comes from real earnings growth.

One-time items distort EPS. Asset sales, legal settlements, and restructuring charges create temporary EPS spikes or dips. Use "adjusted EPS" or look at multi-year trends.

GAAP EPS vs non-GAAP EPS can differ wildly. Companies often report "adjusted" EPS that excludes stock-based compensation — a real expense. Always check which EPS your PE ratio uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between trailing and forward EPS?

Trailing EPS uses actual earnings from the past 12 months. Forward EPS uses analyst estimates for the next 12 months. Forward EPS is useful for valuing growth companies.

Can EPS be negative?

Yes — when a company has net losses. A company losing $100M with 50M shares has EPS of -$2.00. Negative EPS means the PE ratio is meaningless.
