Safe Withdrawal Rate

Definition

The safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of a retirement portfolio you can withdraw annually with high confidence that the money won't run out. The "4% rule" is the most commonly cited benchmark.

Formula

Annual Withdrawal = Portfolio Value × Safe Withdrawal Rate

Example

With a $1,000,000 portfolio and 4% SWR, you can withdraw $40,000/year (adjusted for inflation). This historically survived 30-year retirements in 95%+ of scenarios.
