ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund)

Definition

An ETF is a basket of securities that trades on an exchange like a stock. ETFs track an index, sector, commodity, or strategy, offering diversification in a single trade with low fees.

Formula

ETF Price ≈ NAV = Sum of Holdings Values / Shares Outstanding

Example

SPY tracks the S&P 500 — buying one share gives you proportional exposure to all 500 companies. VTI gives you the entire US stock market. ETFs trade throughout the day unlike mutual funds.
